Cruelty-Free vs. Clean Beauty: What’s the Difference?
You’ve probably seen “cruelty-free” and “clean beauty” floating around in the skincare world — and while they’re often mentioned together, they actually mean different things.
Cruelty-free is all about testing practices. If a product is cruelty-free, it wasn’t tested on animals. Clean beauty, on the other hand, focuses on ingredient safety and transparency (aka: what’s actually inside the bottle).
Here’s where it gets interesting: a product can be cruelty-free but still use ingredients that are harsh or irritating. And the reverse is true — a clean beauty product isn’t automatically cruelty-free unless the brand specifically makes that commitment.
These days, a lot of brands try to check both boxes by pairing ethical choices with more non-toxic, skin-friendly formulations. Reading ingredient lists and paying attention to brand values can help you figure out what aligns with you.
At the end of the day, choosing skincare should feel fun and empowering — not overwhelming. Pick what feels good for your skin and your values.
